Newbie Guide to upgrade to WordPress 2.8. I had a trashed test Blog when I did this via the WP Dashboard so I will not use that method.

(1) Restart your computer

(2) Back up your entire site and DB to your local machine. Easy via CPanel

(3) Go to http://wordpress.org/ and download the WP 2.8 .zip archive

(4) Unzip on your local machine

(5) I removed those two funky default styles and the entire Plugins folder so it would be a faster upgrade

(6) Make local backups of any core .php files you may have tweaked in your WP install

(7) Launch your FTP client and make sure it is set up to overwrite files

(8) Upload the entire contents of the WP 2.8 folder so it overwrites your current install

(9) In your browser go to www.yoursite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php

(10) Click the Upgrade WordPress Database button

(11) Click the Continue Button

(12) Bingo, their is your Blog

(13) Go to http://mysite.com/wp-login.php

(14) Log in and set the cookie via the Remember Me check box

(15) Make another backup of your site and DB. Easy with CPanel

Have fun :) Yes, we can do this via Shell using your Telenet client but that’s beyond the scope of this Post. Around 680 + files to upload and should take you around 30 minutes or less.
